About

Bio

Katerina Torp (she/her) is Helsinki based Finnish artist. She has a diverse cultural background and she works as dancer, choreographer, and administrator. Katerina is a graduate of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and Finnish National Opera Ballet School and her artistic language is a mix of classical ballet, contemporary dance, and other dance styles. She is driven by wild fantasies and she brings them alive

As a choreographer she has created works for Finnish National Ballet, Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland, Balmuir and Ballet Finland, to name a few. Her passion is in multidisciplinary artworks that combine dance with other forms of art and entertainment. She creates for theater stages as well as for unique, site specific environments. She loves to immerse the viewer into the artwork and seeks to play with the senses of the audience.

Her choreographic language is rooted on classical ballet, yet it extends far

beyond “just ballet”. In her works she challenges the traditional norms and rules of ballet by incorporating movement from other dance styles, by playing with 21-century audio-visuality, and by addressing current socio-economic issues and topics. She finds inspiration in the surrounding political environments as well as nature.

As a dancer she has worked in various productions in Finland and abroad. The works include traditional ballet classics, contemporary dance works, theatrical operettas and concerts as well as music videos and art films. In recent years she has worked with Imre and Marne van Opstal, Tero Saarinen Company, Johanna Nuutinen, and Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

In recent years she has also grown as a producer and artistic lead. In 2020 Katerina co-founded artistic collective Kielo Dance Company that presents works of young and ambitious Finnish professionals, and in 2023 she produced a first full evening production Yötön yö (Nightless night) for Kielo Dance Company in Dance House Helsinki. Currently Katerina is working as the head of communications and marketing for nationally and internationally renowned Raekallio Corp.

Katerina is also highly interested in organizational strategies and management structures especially in the field of arts. Therefore she studies management in Aalto University school of Business.

Katerina sees arts as a tool for communication. Through her art she pursues fantasies of a better world by sometimes challenging the current issues, sometimes by dancing passionately from pure joy. Her wish to create good through dance pushed her to produce a charity gala for Ukraine in 2022, in which funds were raised for children affected by the ongoing war.
